Objectives:

Seeking opportunities to lead training programs on the following topics: Java Programming (Introductory/Intermediate), C Programming (all levels); C++ Programming (introductory, for either C programmers or non-C Programmers); PERL Programming (introductory to intermediate), Introduction to Unix and Unix Shell Programming.

Strengths:

Intimate familiarity with the C programming language, as sole author of the first commercially successful C compiler targeted exclusively for personal computers (BDS C for the CP/M-80 operating system circa 1980) and a contemporary book on intermediate/advanced C programming.

Extensive experience with Unix (as System Administrator, programmer and educator). Certified as an SCO Unix "ACE" instructor.

An enthusiastic workshop presentation style, the ability to explain complex technical issues in a clear and intelligible manner, and the patience to recognize and respond to students' individual needs and questions.

Experience:

1978: Support staff technician for Real Time Systems Group, MIT Laboratory for Computer Science. Responsibilities included C systems programming, Unix system administration and T/A duty for undergraduate computer science courses.

1979: Sole author of the BD Software C Compiler (BDS C) package, the first implementation of the C programming language designed exclusively for personal computers. Elements of the BDS C package included the multi-pass compiler, linker and library manager (all coded in assembly language for high efficiency and throughput), extensive C-based system utilities and function libraries, and comprehensive 200-page User's Guide.

1980: Founded BD Software, Inc. to continue research, development and support for the BDS C Compiler. Began serving as President.

1982: Continued direct distribution and advertising of BDS C. Continued performing all technical and product support services for the package. Licensed BDS C for high-volume distribution abroad, including OEM contracts to Sony and Sharp corporations (through Lifeboat Japan).

1988-1989:

  • Designed the Introduction to C workshop, for on-site presentation to businesses switching to the C language for internal development work. Presented the seminar to local businesses, including the Federal Home Loan Bank of Boston, Boston, Ma., Markem Corporation, Keene, NH.
  • Designed, produced all materials for, and served as sole instructor for a six-session weekly course entitled Introduction to Programming in C for the Boston Computer Society, Boston, Ma. (as volunteer).

1989-1992:

  • Member of the technical staff of R&D Publications, Inc., Lawrence, KS. (since acquired by CMP Publications) publishers of The C/C++ Users Journal, Windows Developer's Journal and SysAdmin. Duties included:
    • Editor of the monthly Tech Tips column for Windows Developer's Journal. This column compiles reader-contributed tips, or short programs and technical tricks in the area of Windows system programming and application development.
    • Regular contributor to SysAdmin, on shell programming topics.
    • Author of the bimonthly column Illustrated C for The C Users Journal. Each column presented a fully functional C application, along with extensive annotation. The first two years of Illustrated C columns have been published as a book (of the same name) from Prentice-Hall, Inc. and R&D Publications, Inc.
    • SCO Xenix system administration
    • Database application design, implementation and maintenance (using the Informix SQL and 4GL programming platforms), including implementation of the 2nd class mailing software used for all of the R&D magazines.

Presently:

Independent training contractor and instructor for the Boston University Corporate Education Center's Information Technology Programs, Tyngsboro, MA.
